Front Bumper Replacement

12/30/2022

When I bought the 4Runner it had some bumper damage on the driver side. I wasn't too worried about it knowing I was going to replace the bumper anyway. I bounced back and forth on if I would do an aftermarket replacement or replace with the 1998 style to get rid of the fat lip. After searching several months I somehow stumbled on AMI Custom Bumpers. I read the reviews (100% everywhere) and looked at all their work before deciding reaching out.

After a few messages and ironing out some details on the build (trading out the light bar for some additional 3" pod lights and a license plate mount) I placed an order on December 8th. Yesterday it was delivered and I couldn't wait to get it on.

I set out removing the 2-12mm bolts in the fender wells followed by the 4-14mm bolts on the frame. After yanking off the old bumper I removed the 6-14mm bolts holding the cross bar on. At this point I was able to loosely install the bumper and get an idea of what it would look like. One thing I realized with the bumper on was the brackets for the cross bar stuck out below the bumper. I removed the bumper and broke out my least favorite death machine, the angle grinder. Using a square to make sure I got a straight cut, I removed the lower section of the bracket with a cutting disk. After cutting both sides I cleaned everything up with a grinding disk and a file then sprayed some black Rust-Oleum.

With the bumper on the ground I set out installing the pigtails for the new turn signals. After cutting the original connector off I spliced/soldered/heat shrunk all the connections. While initially testing the lights I thought there was a problem as the lights were stuck in hyper flash. Im 98% sure this is just due to the new lights being LEDs and ill have to replace the relay at some point. With all the lights working I installed the bumper for hopefully the last time.

Side note - don't be like me...get someone to help you put the bumper on. Don't lay on the ground and hold it up with your knees while trying to get the bolts started.

I spent a long time trying to get the bumper lined up in a way that looked good to me. Using the grille/headlights as markers to the welds in the bumper...everything lines up perfect, except a tiny gap on the drivers side. I think the damage to the original bumper was a bit more significant than I first thought and may have actually damaged the fender as well. I tweaked on everything for about 45 minutes before I had the bumper in its final position. All that was left was to trim the fender liner some so it wouldn't stick out.

The new pod lights should be here soon and I can complete the full install!
