Horn Upgrade

If you have a 4Runner or Tacoma you know the pain of wanting to honk at someone but being too embarrassed at your horn. Its the worst, it reminds me of the Looney Toons Roadrunner.  I've been looking around for a good replacement for a while and I just happened to stumble on some videos of people dropping Cadillac 4-Note Horns in their vehicles. This was exactly what I was looking for, something special sounding and LOUD. I did a quick search of the local junkyard for some potential donors, packed my tools, and headed out.

I was first checking strictly Cadillacs, specifically Deville's and Eldorado's but wasn't having much luck. They seemed to just have the 'A' and 'F' tones, which I took anyway thinking I was going to strike out on the 4-Tone. Feeling slightly discouraged I checked my final cars, 2 mid 90s Buick Roadmaster's. Popping the hood I saw 4 horns shoved in the fenders and knew I hit gold. I removed them all and checked out answering the question from the cashier "What are you doing with all these horns?"

After getting home and testing all of them, I had 2 full sets of working horns. My brain immediately started to figure out how to mount them so I took a scrap piece of aluminum flat bar and played with where they could fit. The best spot was where I removed the 'fat lip' shown below. Taking some 3/4" bolts I was able to mount the horns to the flat bar using the existing holes in the original bracket. After cutting off the excess bracket, cleaning everything up, and spraying some black paint the horns were just about ready to install.

I really liked the original connections and didn't see a reason to replace them, I just spliced some extra wire to the ends to make the final connection.  I crimped a spade connection on the end and routed the wire to the original horn connection, 2 horns per line just like they were in the Buick. Then I wrapped it up in electrical tape just to make sure it didn't fall out.

No more horn shame, I cant wait for someone to sit at a green light.
