Tundra Brake Upgrade
3/18/2023
Beautiful weather all week so naturally its 40 and raining when I want to get the brakes installed. Unfortunately I wasn't able to document this job as much as I wanted because once I got the brake fluid on my gloves I didn't want to use my camera.
Calipers, pads, and rotors all came from Rock Auto and the stainless brake lines from Trail Gear.
I started by jacking up the front and removing the wheels and spraying penetrating lube on all the connections and bolts. Knowing I wanted to replace all the brake fluid, I drained the master cylinder and then started removing the rubber brake hoses followed by the hard line to the calipers. Using a breaker bar I removed the 2 bolts holding the calipers on and gave the rotor a little tap to free it.
Once the OE equipment was off the install of the Tunda brakes was pretty straight forward. Everything went on easy and fit great. I also replaced the rear rubber line with a stainless one. (remove the spare tire for easier access)
All that was left was to fill the master cylinder and bleed the brakes.
I hate bleeding brakes.
My wife says I always buy a tool for every project I do and I proved her right here. I tried ONE OF THESE and the results were mixed. I have the typical post Tundra brake upgrade long travel and spongy brake feel. Ill probably try activating the ABS and and bleeding them again before taking it somewhere.
So the results are still out. I feel like it does stop really good but the brake pedal feel leaves me a little disappointed. Hopefully it will firm up with some ABS activation and a few more bleeds.
