Testing Touch Up Paint
2/10/2023
Thought I would take a shot today at touching up a few of the areas that were damaged. I chose this spot because I felt it was in a area where if it went horribly wrong nobody would notice.
I started by cleaning the area I was going to be working in with some degreaser and sanding the spots with 1000 grit to get rid of the high points. I then filled the scratches with some spot putty and sanded them flush. Then the scary part, paint. First I taped off the area to prevent primer over spray, removing it after 3 coats. Then another round of sanding and cleaning to knock down all the high points and smooth out the primer. Then came the basecoat color and I have to admit, its pretty spot on which is amazing considering the paint is 23 years old. I finished the 3 coats of the base color and moved right to the clear coat, again spraying 3 coats. After letting it dry for a few hours I did another round of wet sanding to smooth out the clear coat followed by lots of buffing to bring out the shine.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with the results. At a distance you can make out a slight line where the paint color meets the original color but hopefully over time it will fade. I don't really know how to prevent it, maybe making the area smaller...or maybe I should have done the entire bottom of the door.
One thing is for sure, it looks 100% better than the scratches.
